This piece was freely inspired by some elements of japanese religion and folklore and particularly the shintō concept of "Go-shintai".
Go-shintai (literally "The body of Kami") is an object to which is summoned a divine spirit, allowing human-beings to "communicate" with said spirit. It's a temporary receptacle for the kami (hence the "body" allegory) and is worshiped as such.
There are several types of go-shintai. It can be a ritual object (like a sword, magatama jewel, mirror, etc.) or simply a natural object: tree, forest, rock, mountain, river or even in some cases animals.
In this artwork, I imagine the tree in the middle of water to be a go-shintai but the same could be said generally about all nature and its manifestations...As a matter of fact, according to early shintō beliefs, all are charged with spiritual power.
In the background of the picture is drawn a Dai-tengu, a long-nosed and winged omniscient spirit believed to have great skills and knowledge in the art of combat/war [the legend says that, when he was young, famous warrior Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune was taught swordsmanship & strategy by tengu, allowing him to later take revenge on the Taira clan ].
He is holding a magical fan made of feathers called Ha-uchiwa. Similarly, on the left of the image is a plant known as "Tengu's feathers fan" (Tengu no ha-uchiwa) because of its obvious resemblance with said mythical fan.
On a totally different level, my musical inspiration for this piece was Sasagawa Miwa's song " izanai " and all albums of her wonderful discography, in general. *0*
